Construction of State Highway 5 began in 1924-1925 and basically followed the bed of the Old Linn Creek Road. With the easier access, tourists began coming to the area, prompting the building of Laurie's first general store, followed by a one-tank gas station, blacksmith shop, saw mill and a church. In order to get a post office, the town had to have a name and chose "Laurie" after the name of its first general store.

Laurie is now a thriving area with superb medical facilities, pharmacies, resorts, marinas, restaurants, grocery stores, real estate offices, banks, and retail shops of many different varieties. If you're in the area, you owe it to yourself to take a drive to the quiet side of Lake of The Ozarks and see for yourself why some of Missouri's earliest settlers lived here.
